PPB is the unit for measurement of Dissolved Hydrogen (DH) in water.
PPB or parts per billion describes how much of one substance is dissolved in a sample of water or solvent.
There are various ways to measure PPB in water. The simplest and most accurate way of measuring PPB is by using a PPB monitor. However, one should note that PPB Meters should only be used in neutral-pH hydrogen water and are NOT supposed to be used in alkaline water. The readings thus observed in alkaline water are not correct and may lead to incorrect observations. (refer to PPB meter manual)
Hydrogen water generators or hydrogen water producing equipment are the best and the most reliable means to produce molecular hydrogen (dissolved in water).
Water that has molecular hydrogen DISSOLVED in it is known as hydrogen water. Such devices which produce hydrogen water have a specialized PEM enabled titanium platinum TRITAN chamber. They do not use the conventional simple type of alkaline ionizers chamber to produce ORP or PPB.
These devices are very sophisticated and are specialized to make molecular hydrogen water. They typically use a PEM (proton exchange membrane) to produce significant amounts of molecular hydrogen without altering the pH of “Source water”. These chambers are also known as dissolver chambers or hydrogen chambers. Most of the electrolysis chambers available in the market use conventional and cheaper ABS material. The best material to be used for electrolysis-chambers is TRITAN that is very expensive as compared to ABS.
Undissolved-hydrogen or hydrogen produced during water electrolysis via ionizers is a perfect example to showcase it. These devices focus only on increasing the pH of water (potential of hydrogen ions) and not on producing dissolved hydrogen in water. Hydrogen produced in such cases simply evaporates as these machines are not designed or fitted with a dissolver/hydrogen chamber responsible for dissolving hydrogen gas in water. Moreover, these devices if optimized, do sometimes reflect PPB in water but at a very very high water pH which humans can’t consume (> 9.5pH).
Whenever PPB is produced by an authentic hydrogen water generator or by an electrolysis chamber, ozone gas is released as a byproduct that needs to be separated from the stream of potable hydrogen water. Unfortunately, very few machines are fitted with PEMs and Ozone separators for removing the ozone gas from hydrogen water.
